Description: The Director of Learning is responsible for contributing to the strategic oversight and administrative, logistical, and planning support for Handel and Haydn Society's portfolio of learning activities for people of all ages. This position has a particular focus on programs reaching youth learners, both in and out of school.

Reports to:  Vice President of Education and Community Engagement

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and manage all aspects of the Vocal Arts Program, including the ensembles, musicianship classes, High School Soloists program, and scholarship awards. Work with the artistic team on season planning to produce concerts, curriculum, and evaluations that meet the goals of the program. Suggest collaborations to enhance the artistic experience for singers and presence of VAP in the community. Lead the recruitment and retention efforts for VAP and contribute to efforts to engage and support families and alumni.
• Manage in-school partnership programming. Guide curriculum and execution of all activities, balancing H+H's priorities and schools' needs, including scheduling, evaluation, and reporting. Steward existing school relationships and facilitate the introduction of new school partners and activities in support of H+H's strategic vision.
• Provide support for H+H's learning programming for college students and adults.
• In collaboration with VP of Education and Community Engagement, ensure that all learning programs meet the highest professional standards of innovation, quality, relevance, and engagement. Encourage programs that are creative, effective, cutting-edge, responsive, and equitable.  Recommend and implement changes and improvements. 
• Supervise 17-member artistic team for H+H learning activities for young people, including teaching arts and the Vocal Arts Program conductors, musicianship faculty, and accompanists. Manage and mentor the part-time Education Coordinator to be a successful and fulfilled member of the learning and community engagement team.
• Act as a liaison with key community partners, including Boston Public Schools, Boston Latin School, New England Conservatory, and the Massachusetts Music Educators Association.
• Proactively increase knowledge in topics related to this position, including trends in music education and urban education and the experiences of marginalized and at-risk communities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Creative and strategic approach with passion for sharing music with all people and demonstrated experience designing and leading learning opportunities through music.
• Knowledge of choral techniques, vocal pedagogy, current trends in music education, the National Core Arts Standards, the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework, and Baroque and Classical repertoire.
• Experience working in a public school setting and history of collaborating with children, parents, patrons, and educators.
• Bachelor's degree in music education or equivalent professional experience. Advance degree in a related field preferred.
• Leadership and management skills to effectively oversee, mentor, and motivate staff.
• Knowledge of Greater Boston's communities and arts ecosystem.
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Exceptional communication skills and attention to detail.
• Experience collaborating and connecting with historically marginalized communities.
• Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, or another language spoken by new Bostonians is desirable.
• Authentic interest in advocacy for music education and the Handel and Haydn Society.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekends as required for concerts and events. Availability to attend occasional rehearsals of the Vocal Arts Program on Saturday mornings at Boston Latin School is essential.
